The 14-year-old eighth-grader who has not been named sustained burns
on one thigh and her back, and was taken to Southern Maine Health Care
in Biddeford for treatment.
She had just sat down before her first-period French class Friday
morning when she and her friends sitting nearby heard a pop from her
Apple iPhone 5C which was in her back pocket.
The principal Jeff Rodman said, "She knew right away something was
wrong and, in a panic, knew her pants were on fire caused by the cell
phone."
A group of girls gathered around the student and helped remove her
clothes, while boys who were in the class were ushered outside.
According to her mother, Mrs Judy Milligan who had given her daughter
the green iPhone 5C two months ago, she was shocked when she was
called by the school to inform her about the incident., adding that
her daughter had remained calm and even asked to go back to school
after being treated in hospital.
It is not known what caused the schoolgirl's phone to overheat.
